The G4 lamps are bi-pin or two-pin standard, defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). These types of lamps have two pins at the input. The number 4 in the name indicates the center-to-center distance between two pins, which is 4mm in this type, usually found in under-cabinet puck lights, landscape lighting, and automotive lighting.

The Right Voltage: A G4 LED capsule is a low power device with a usual operating voltage of 12 volts DC. While the main voltage around the world is 220-240 volts, you cannot directly connect the G4 led with the main voltage.

The Right Transformer: You would need a transformer to reduce the main voltage to 12 volts. There are two types of transformers commonly known in the market. The electromagnetic transformer and the electronic. Electronic transformers are suggested due to their efficiency and low cost.

The compatibility: While replacing 12v halogen lights with G4 LED 12v, it is important to check the compatibility of the G4 LED lights with the lighting fixtures. While all the halogen lights operate on AC, it is imperative to check the compatibility of the fixture with the LED light. Both should be either AC or DC, but never different.

The Right Power: Check the power rating of the fixture where the halogen lights were installed. A 20 Watt halogen bulb would normally be replaced by 2-4 Watts of G4 LED.

The Right size: The size of the fixture should always be measured prior to the purchase of LED lights.

The Right Model: If you want to replace only the lights and not the fixture, you have to get the G4 LED 12v in AC. However, it is highly recommended that both the fixtures and the lights should be replaced to maximize the long-term benefits of the replacements.
